I remember when I first turned Vegan, almost two years ago now, my friend who is dairy alternative said ‘You need to try this Yogurt! I had it all the time in Aus, but I really struggle to find it here!’ She was talking about Co Yo! It took me ages to find it, I think I ended up finding it in a little Health Store in London. I thought it was delicious! However I couldn’t keep travelling from the Middles down South to eat it, plus I don’t like Soya Yogurts, so yogurts soon became a thing of the past for me. That was then, this is now. I can buy Co Yo in Sainsburys, Tesco & Waitrose, as well as other wonderful Coconut Yogurts, all in different flavours, textures & prices. All are wonderful! & even though they are all probably competing for us Vegans we are just happy because finally CHOICE is winning. Especially for me, you all know my love for Coconut products!
In June 2009, Henry (Co Yo Founder) was living a semi-retired life with his wife Sandra on Australia’s Sunshine Coast, their seven children all grown up. Henry had been searching for a new way to bring the benefits of coconut to the world – something that hadn’t been done before. That’s when his lightbulb moment struck. At around 3am on a Sunday morning he sat up in bed and thought: I’m going to make yoghurt out of coconuts. He went straight to the computer, eager to find out if anyone else was making coconut yoghurt – real yoghurt containing probiotic cultures, but made from coconut milk instead of dairy – on a commercial scale. No one was.
Henry’s entrepreneurial brain went into overdrive. He imagined a coconut yoghurt that was so smooth and creamy that people would fall in love with the taste first, then be impressed by its health benefits. But could it be done? Henry had no idea. He was propelled by a passion that stemmed from his idyllic childhood. He’d never made yoghurt in his life, but working with coconuts was second nature to him.
Co Yo is a probiotic, cultured milk yogurt. It is available in lots of different flavours; Natural, Mango, Morello Cherry, Vanilla, Mixed Berry, Raw Chocolate & Salted Caramel. Of course these little beauties are Vegan, but they’re also Sugar Free & Gluten Free.
The lovely people at Co Yo were kind enough to send me their brand new Salted Caramel Yogurt; to try, test & shout about. The yogurt is thick, more like a Greek Yogurt then a Muller Corner (that’s for the yogurt cognisor out their). The yogurt needs a little stir to reveal the lovely creaminess. The smell is gorgeous, slightly sweet & definitely caramely. As it’s Coconut based their is no gross graininess or watery separation that Soya Yogurts often have. The colour is how you expect salted caramel to be; a lush smooth golden brown kind of colour.
The taste of the yogurt is extremely enjoyable. The coconut taste is almost unnoticeable so you really can enjoy the Salted Caramel yumminess! A healthier option than the regular salted caramels, our Salted Caramel is crafted with natural unrefined Coconut Sugar and Himalayan Salt. It’s great on it’s own & mixed with fruit for a snack or dessert, or for breakfast. I had three, so I had them three different ways.
For breakfast, Koko Dairy Free Light Milk, with Nutri-Brex, Banana & a big dollop of Co Yo Salted Caramel.
With Blueberries, Banana & Seeds for Dessert.
And of course. On it’s own.
This yogurt isn’t cheap, however luxury products (like my Booja Booja review last week) aren’t always cheap & there is nothing wrong with that. This yogurt screams luxury, it really is heaven in a mouthful, so I don’t mind paying a little extra for it. I’m currently on the hunt for the Raw Chocolate Co Yo, one that I haven’t found yet, but I’m dying to try, I know I’m going to love it! However all the Co Yo products I have tried I have fallen in love with licking the pot clean (if I don’t lick it clean my bunnies do, yes they love it too!). The Salted Caramel for now is certainly my favourite & will be added to my weekly shop list. I highly recommend this Coconut Yogurt brand, it’s tasty, healthy, soya & dairy free. It doesn’t get any better then that!
