Benefits of Eating Fruits.

I love fruit. I mean I really really love fruit. I have at least five fruits a day – then I have vegetables on top of that too… Five a day. In my life it’s more like ten. That can’t be a bad thing though. Can it? Let’s see if fruit really is an important part of a healthy life style.

Firstly fruits are low in sodium, fat & calories. They contain no cholesterol. They are an essential nutrient that us humans don’t get enough of. These nutrients are potassium, dietary fibre, vitamin C & folic acid. Let’s start off with potassium – which helps to contain a healthy blood pressure. Fruits that contain the highest amounts of potassium are bananas, peaches, cantaloupe melon, honeydew melon, oranges peaches & apricots. Dietary fibre is key for a healthy diet. It helps reduce blood cholesterol & can lower the risk of heart disease. It’s also great for… Pooping – how would grown-ups phrase it. It helps reduce constipation. Vitamin C is really important. I never knew why but my Mother always used to tell me so. Turns out good ol’ vit C repairs body tissue. Helps heal cuts, wounds & keeps teeth & gums healthy. Folic acid helps the body develop red blood cells. Especially important for women at childbearing age. This reduces the risk of neural tube defects, spina bifida & anencephaly during mental development. My favourite little fact about fruit. It provides a feeling of fullness with a lower calorie intake. This is great for me, because I’m always hungry.

Eating a diet rich in fruit as part of an overall healthy diet of course may reduce the risk of heart disease, heart attacks, strokes obesity, type two diabetes, as well as certain types of cancers. It can also lower blood pressure, risk of developing kidney stones & bone loss.

That’s pretty much it in a nut shell – or should I say an orange peel… Maybe? Anyway Fruit it great. It’s the tasty sweet treat that you can have for dessert or a little snack but it doesn’t have any of the bad stuff in it. What I’m trying to say is eat more fruit! It’s the best!
